Not everyone is super talented at writing, but you don't have to be a poet to create a beautiful letter from your heart that will mean so much to your child when they are older.

If you haven't heard already, I am offering mother's love letter mini sessions this year! I just love the thought of capturing this special letter in your very own voice as you see the special bond you have together in the video. If you aren't sure what I mean click here for an example and all the juicy details about the sessions.

But whether you are preparing for the session or just wanting to write something special to your little one here are some tips to make it extra special.

1. Brainstorm first! Do remember in school when you had to write your brainstorm for papers? Well, do the same here. Grab a cup of tea, a photo of your sweetheart and a journal, and just relax. Think about your child. Let your mind wander to all your favorite moments, like when you saw them for the first time, their first word, some random moment burned into your brain because it was just so funny or sweet! Now, pick up your pencil and write down what comes to your mind. Maybe you write down everything you love about them, all your favorite memories, the way they make you feel. If you think it, just write it! Its okay to be messy, its okay to cry...it probably wont be the last time you cry during all of this (okay so now would be a good time to grab some tissues too!)!

2. Now that you are a blubbering mess, it's time to organize the emotional chaos into something your child will understand. Don't worry if you can't do all of this in one session! Now you are going to determine what in general you want to say. Look at your journal and find some themes naturally happening.

3. When you have an idea of where you want to go, put that pen to your paper and write away. Some things to keep in mind if you get stuck: tell your child you love them. It might go without saying, but kids - what am I saying?! - PEOPLE really need to hear those three words! Tell your child what they are good at. Tell them your favorite thing about them. Give lots of positive words like love, proud, enjoy, cherish, and believe. Think about what you wanted to hear from your parents.

4. So now you have your first draft. Read over what you wrote and be sure to read out loud. How does it sound? Does it make sense? Can you say anything in a nicer way that flows off the tongue better? Are you repeating any particular word? If so, use a thesaurus or google, to find something better. Keep it short and sweet, so find any sentences that are saying basically the same thing and just keep your favorite. Check your grammar and spelling (because one day they will be able to spell and they will call you out!). Read it and read it again, and then prepare it however you would like to give it to them.

5. If you are preparing your letter for our mother's session, read your letter out loud to someone else and get some pointers on how to speak or record yourself on your phone to practice. There is no pressure to get this perfect, but you might feel more comfortable with some practice under your belt.

There you have it! One day your child will appreciate this time you gave to freeze the way you feel about them right now, today. They grow up so fast! If you think your memory will be blurry, just imagine what theirs will be. It will be so special to hear how you felt about them from such a young age!!

And if after writing this letter you are convinced you need to have a video with your little one to fully preserve who they are right now click here to book your session!
